Congratulations and thank you for purchasing one of the finest Thermal Zero turbo blankets made in America!!! Installation of the blanket is pretty straightforward and should not take long, depending on your application.

***DO NOT INSTALL A TURBO BLANKET ON A TURBO OR ENGINE THAT IS LEAKING OR BURNING OIL! ***

Although all Thermal Zero blankets are made from completely non-flammable materials, an oil soaked blanket can become a fire hazard and will void any implied warranty.

What you will need:

  • 1 pair of latex gloves (your hands may itch otherwise…)
  • Either a good pair of heavy duty scissors or some wire snips to cut the mechanics securing wire supplied with the kit

To Install

Our premium turbo shields are extremely easy to install on the turbo itself although in some cases you may have to remove things in order to gain clear access to the turbo’s exhaust side.

If the kit you purchased came with exhaust wrap you will want to wrap it first since in most cases you will have to remove the down pipe to wrap it. When you go to install the turbo shield you will want the down pipe to be installed because sometimes it is very hard to install the down pipe with the turbo shield secured into place. If you are unfamiliar on how to install exhaust wrap please see the “How to install wrap” article in the TECH section.

Take the mechanics wire that was supplied to you with your turbo shield kit. Cut two 10″ lengths of wire from the spool supplied.

Take each piece of mechanics wire and create a loop in the wire to secure around the rear hook of the blanket.

Next, install the blanket around the exhaust side of the turbocharger and snug it down by hooking your twisted mechanics wire around the opposite hook on the turbo shield.

Now, doesn’t that look nice?

Cleaning and Maintaining

  • Use a damp rag with de-greasing dish detergent to clean grease or oil from your blanket.
  • Keep your blanket away from oil and fuel leaks!
  • Do not use brake cleaner or any flammable liquid on or around the blanket as the blanket can act as a sponge for some of these liquids and could start a fire!

ALL THERMAL ZERO BLANKETS ARE ASBESTOS FREE AND MADE WITH COMPLETELY NON-FLAMMABLE MATERIALS.

Our ties normally do not require any tools to install them properly but here are a few tips to make your installation procedure go a bit easier.

You may want to wear gloves since you are most likely going to be installing them while in the vicinity of exhaust wrap. The gloves will keep your hands from itching and protect you from any potential harm you may come near.

All the ties pretty much work the same way, and really work in much the same way as your everyday plastic zip tie.

Insert the flat tail end of the tie into the head of the tie, position it properly and pull the tail end of the tie through the head till it secures tight.

When using the Thermal Zero Snap Strip Ties it is sometimes necessary to take a flat head screw driver against the back side of the head of the Stainless tie and pull the tail end through with a pair of small pliers.

If you decided to purchase the band style ties you may every once in awhile come across a ties that does not seem like it wants to grip really tight. If this is the case you can take a small pair of pliers and lightly pinch the head of the tie.

This will make the tie grip a whole lot tighter to itself and not let it give as much.

Be careful not to pinch down to hard with the pliers on the tie otherwise you may end up ruining the tie.

**NOTE: Turbo blankets are designed to hold heat INSIDE the blanket NOT BLOCK IT from outside heat sources. The inside of the blanket will retain more than 2000 degrees Fahrenheit direct heat, the outside shell will hold considerably less. Therefore DO NOT install the blanket with the outside shell contacting an exhaust manifold that has not been heat wrapped or properly protected. It will destroy the OUTER shell of
the blanket!**

To Install

  1. Wear gloves!! This is a must if you want to keep from itching for the next few hours.
  2. Remove the turbo blanket from the packing and prepare your engine bay for installing the blanket (i.e. move anything you can away from the turbo so you can get full access to it). In most cases you can install the blanket while the turbo is still attached to the engine. In some cases though you may have to remove the turbo.
  3. The blanket is installed with ceramic (white fiber material) touching the turbo and the colored material facing out.
  4. You must first maneuver the notch so that it clears the wastegate lever.
  5. After maneuvering the notched side around the wastegate rod, take the supplied wire and measure about 15-20″ of wire. Cut the wire and then fold it in half. Loop the center of the wire around the securing hook that is closest to the wastegate notch.
  6. Draw each side of the wire around either side of the turbo flange. Secure either side of the wire to both front hooks of the blanket and snug the blanket into position around the turbo.
  7. Loop the wore around both hooks multiple times to make sure it stays in place.
  8. Readjust the blanket, if necessary, to make sure it will not contact the wastegate rod and it is sitting int he center of the exhaust housing.

Cleaning and Maintaining

  • Use a damp rag with de-greasing dish detergent to clean grease or oil from your blanket.

Use these instructions to install Thermal Zero Exhaust Heat Wrap. Failure to follow installation instructions properly may result in an inferior product experience and/or void manufacturer’s warranty.

Before you begin, you’ll need:

Thermal Zero Header Wrap

Calculate how much wrap you’ll need for your project using this Heat Wrap Calculator

Thermal Zero Stainless Steels

You’ll need stainless steel ties to secure the wrap at the beginning and ending of the pipe.

Latex Gloves

Exhaust wrap is very fibrous and it is highly recommended you use latex gloves when installing your heat wrap.

Wrapping a pipe properly can be very time consuming to make it look good, so take your time and don’t get frustrated! Just make sure your wraps are tight and even for the best appearance.

Some people choose to soak the heat wrap in water before wrapping a pipe – this can be helpful, but it’s not necessary.

Steps to install:

  1. How To Install Thermal Zero Exhaust Header Wrap Image 1Take out the wrap from the packaging. Use the exhaust wrap calculator in the Tech section of our website to make sure you have enough wrap to cover your project.!
  2. How To Install Thermal Zero Exhaust Header Wrap Image 2You may soak the wrap in water first to make easier to wrap the pipe tightly but this is not necessary.
  3. How To Install Thermal Zero Exhaust Header Wrap Image 3Start by wrapping the desired pipe with about ½” overlap depending on the width of wrap you are using then secure your first wrap with a Thermal Zero Stainless Steel Zip Tie to hold it in place! !
  4. How To Install Thermal Zero Exhaust Header Wrap Image 4Every wrap you make down the pipe after that initial wrap needs to be ¼” – ½” of overlap. This also depends on if you are trying to wrap a pipe that curves. If the pipe has a drastic curve you may want to overlap more to make sure you do not create a bare spot that has not been covered with heat wrap. Our wrap is designed to disperse heat across the covered area and not create hot spots on the pipe if you have too much of an overlap.!
  5. How To Install Thermal Zero Exhaust Header Wrap Image 5Finish the section of wrap by cutting of any excess wrap and securing your work in place with another Thermal Zero Stainless Steel Zip Tie. After reinstalling the pipe start the engine, while the engine is running the heat wrap will start the “Set up” process and may smoke or steam for short period of time but this is completely NORMAL.

Maintenance and Cleaning

When cleaning your wrap DO NOT use a pressure washer or high pressure water of any sort as it an loosen the exhaust wrap fibers. Instead take a damp cloth and wipe debris or dirt from the wrap.

How to Install Universal Starter Shield https://staging.thermalzero.com/how-to-install-universal-starter-shield/ Wed, 23 Jan 2019 19:37:07 +0000 http://new.thermalzero.com/?p=4010 You'll need a flexible measuring tape for this installation. With a few measurements and a little work you'll have your starter shield installed in no time.

The post How to Install Universal Starter Shield first appeared on Thermal Zero Staging Site.]]>

Things you need:

  • 1 pair of good scissors
  • 1 pair of gloves (so your hands don’t itch)
  • 1 flexible measuring tape for measuring the circumference, and length of the starter. (you could always use a piece of string too and just measure the string)

Installing the universal starter shield is very easy and take about 5 minutes…

  1. Measure the circumference of your starter including the solenoid, write down this measurement.
  2. Measure the total length of the starter (FLANGE TO REAR OF STARTER), write down this measurement.
  3. The piece of aluminized blanket that is supplied in the kit is 7″ x 22″ long and for most applications is far too much material. Take your  circumference of the starter measurement (this is the length the blanket will be cut to) and add one inch to the measurement so there will  be overlap on the blanket when you install it. Cut down the blanket to this length. So for example if your starter measured 16 inches around you will want to add 1 inch to that (17 inches). Now cut the material down to the 17″ measurement.
  4. Now take the total length of the starter (FROM THE MOUNTING FLANGE TO THE REAR OF THE STARTER), this is the width that the blanket will be cut to. Mark your blanket with sharpie or a pen and cut it out to that length.
  5. Wrap the aluminized blanket you have cut out around the starter, be sure to shield or keep the blanket away from any exposed power supply cables to the starter as the aluminized side of the blanket is conductive. Take the two 23″ long ties supplied in the kit and secure the blanket to the starter. Cut off any excess from the stainless ties and you are done!
